Will I Be Prescribed Medication During Detox?

During detox, medications are often prescribed to safely help individuals manage withdrawal symptoms, especially for substances that can have life-threatening withdrawal effects.

These medications are used to alleviate discomfort, reduce cravings, and prevent complications such as seizures or severe mental distress. However, it is important to note that we do not force medication on anybody.

The use of medications during detox is always tailored to each individual’s needs and preferences, ensuring a compassionate and patient-centered approach to care. Here are some of the following medications that may be prescribed during detox:

  • Benzodiazepines :

    • Benzodiazepines are commonly used to manage alcohol withdrawal symptoms, such as anxiety, agitation, and seizures. They help calm the nervous system and reduce the risk of severe complications during detoxification.

  • Naltrexone:

    • Naltrexone helps reduce alcohol cravings and the pleasurable effects of drinking. It can be administered orally or as a monthly injection, aiding in the prevention of relapse during the detox process and beyond.

  • Anticonvulsants (e.g., Carbamazepine, Valproate):

    • Anticonvulsants may be used to manage withdrawal symptoms and prevent seizures, especially in individuals with a history of severe withdrawal or seizure disorders.

  • Thiamine (Vitamin B1):

    • Thiamine is often administered to prevent Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, a serious neurological condition caused by thiamine deficiency common in chronic alcohol users. It helps protect brain health during the detox process.
  • Buprenorphine (Suboxone, Subutex):

    • Buprenorphine is a partial opioid agonist that alleviates withdrawal symptoms and cravings without producing the same high as other opioids. Suboxone also contains naloxone to prevent misuse.

  • Naltrexone (Vivitrol):

    • Naltrexone blocks the euphoric and sedative effects of opioids, reducing cravings and helping to prevent relapse. It can be given as a monthly injection (Vivitrol) making it a convenient option for long-term treatment.
  • Modafinil (Provigil):

    • Modafinil is a wakefulness-promoting agent that can help reduce cravings and improve cognitive function in individuals recovering from stimulant addiction. It supports the stabilization of sleep patterns and attention.

  • Bupropion (Wellbutrin):

    • Bupropion is an antidepressant that can reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms in individuals with stimulant use disorder. It also helps improve mood and motivation during recovery.
  • Tapering Schedules with Longer-acting Benzodiazepines (e.g., Diazepam, Clonazepam):

    • Gradual tapering using longer-acting benzodiazepines helps manage withdrawal symptoms and reduce the risk of seizures during benzodiazepine detox. This method provides a safer and more comfortable withdrawal process.

  • Anticonvulsants (e.g., Carbamazepine, Valproate):

    • Anticonvulsants are sometimes used to manage withdrawal symptoms and prevent seizures in individuals tapering off benzodiazepines.
  • Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs, e.g., Fluoxetine, Sertraline):

    • SSRIs are commonly used to treat depression and anxiety disorders that co-occur with substance use disorders. They help stabilize mood and reduce symptoms of mental health conditions.

  • Atypical Antipsychotics:

    • Atypical antipsychotics are used to manage symptoms of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and severe depression in individuals with co-occurring substance use disorders. They help stabilize mood and reduce psychotic symptoms.
